Shake Shack Line, originally uploaded by maisa_nyc.

I went to the Shake Shack in Madison Square Park the other day (felt like a treat on a hot summer day), and ordered a root beer float with vanilla ice cream. Pretty simple, right?

They gave me one of those wireless beepers that they give you at restaurants sometimes while you wait for your table. I didn’t quite understand why I needed this for a simple root beer float, but it became apparent after several minutes.

Even though all that I required was a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a paper cup with some root beer, they took over FIFTEEN MINUTES to get my order out.

I know that this place gets a lot of raves, but they are clearly way over-taxed and they seem to have an overly-idealized sense that as long as everyone waits the same, it doesn’t matter how long the wait is.

Well, the floats from Mister Softee might not be quite as good, but they don’t take 15 minutes to make it either.
